My take on friends passing 09/18/2011

Today was hard saying Goodbye to my friend Eddie. Eddie was the hardest working in the sport I love and most times caught flack for pushing it to the next level. Eddie had passion for his family and his sport, a work ethic unmatched and a no BS attitude. He did things his own way, some people jumped on board others tried to get in his way, but he just kept moving. A family man though is what Eddie should be known for, he loved his son and his wife and thats what truly counts. Eddie did good by me since the day I meet him and I love him for that and his passion for the sport. I have lost alot of good friends such as my childhood surf friend Trevor Dickson, my Hawaiian lifeguard brother Keao Perez and now Eddie. None of these people crossed paths, yet they where very close to me and effected my life greatly.

1. Trevor had the warmest heart and when I first move to Hawaii out of Highschool he would stop by at my NJ home to say hi to my mom and see if she needed anything. His first Hawaii season he lived with myself and friend garrett and charged on a surf board. He grew up a bodyboarder and made a switch with ease. He was a waterman and died skateboarding Waiamae on the big island 6 years ago now. I loved Trevor alot, he was a true friend and had the biggest heart.

2. Keao was the nicest true Hawaiian you could ever meet, big heart, great smile and excepted my this dumb NJ haole more then I ever could have asked for. He taught what is meant to live "Pono" and what was important in being a watermen and its not who gets the biggest barrel but it is who takes care and passes on the knowledge and respect of the ocean.

3. Eddie was a friend and supporter of all I did.  I once got a spread in Movement magazine and he told me he was sure it was the biggest wave and eastcoaster had gotten to that point, but he said I could go bigger. He pushed me, he was my west coast connection taking care of me every trip to CA a place I felt lost.He like me was a Hawaiian transplant and because of his heart was treated like gold when he lived here and on his trips there after. His wife was amazing and Beta my wife loved them both as they where just kind people and loved their young boy Ed junior. Eddie like myself tried to push bodyboarding to the US, we wanted more for the youth of the US to expect more from themseleves, to charge harder and to go for it. Both from places that it is not easy to make it in this sport, we tried to kick down doors despite peoples sometimes negaitive responses to our progression of the sport on the business side. I miss my partner in bodyboarding, he was an American Hustler in the best sense of the term, he didnt talk crap, he made things happen whether you liked it or not if he set his mind to it, it got done. He is a legend, he carried the sport when it needed a stretcher and I hope I can push myself to pick up where he left off. He is a legend and his friends are a testiment to this. Never backing down, humble when he was supposed to but never taking lip and always a good family man. Aloha Eddie I hope you, trevor and Keao meet in the here after and watch over you friends and family as a little Hui in Heaven. I have a feeling you would all get along together well up there.

LOVE YOU GUYS- YOU MEANT THE WORLD TO ME AND I AM BETTER TO HAVE KNOWN YOU.
